Reflexology is a natural healing method that utilizes a number of hand, finger and thumb massage techniques in order to generate reaction from the vital organs of the body through calculated massage applied to the different pressure points located in a person’s hands or feet. The important factors in doing reflexology are the reflex zones or pressure points and the techniques used to apply pressure to the reflex zones.

In order to know where the reflex zones are located it is advisable to consult a reflexology foot chart and a reflexology hand chart before trying to learn and do the natural healing art of reflexology.

Some of the techniques used in reflexology are;

Effleurage – This technique is used to warm the foot and prepare the body for the reflexology session. This is characterized by gentle massage strokes to warm the foot and to make the patient more relax in undergoing the reflexology treatment. Oil may be used to make the strokes smoother and to provide more warmth.

Effleurage may be used at the start of the treatment and in other parts of the session.

Thumb Walking – This method is also known as the caterpillar walk. It is the basic technique that is most often used throughout a reflexology treatment session. Using the thumb walking technique enables the therapist to manipulate the different areas and organs of the body.

Friction Circles – This is characterized by small circular movements done on top of a person’s foot. This technique is also used as a form of warm up movement to start a reflexology treatment.

These techniques along with several others may be done repeatedly and alternately all throughout a reflexology session.
